Each one separately thinks that he’s the only one that’s afraid.
„True West” is a sharp and tense story of two brothers whose return to their childhood home pits them against each other, ripping open wounds both old and new. Whose life is more righteous? Whose dreams more real?
Sam Shepard was not only one of the most influential 20th Century American playwrights, but also an actor, director and screenwriter. “True West”, which premiered in 1980, is one of his most known plays and one part of his family trilogy alongside “Curse of the Starving Class” and “Buried Child”, which won him a Pulitzer. Even though the title “True West” could refer to the land of freedom and opportunity, Shepard’s role as a writer has always been that of a mythbuster and “True West” is no exception. Shepard destroys the American Dream by showing us just how broken and empty that dream is.
