King Lear yearns to be free from his obligations and to enjoy life. Therefore, he decides to give up his power and divide the kingdom between his daughters. This unexpected and selfish decision sets in motion events that lead the whole land into a whirlwind of conflicts, intrigues, and conspiracies, bringing unforeseen consequences.
“King Lear” is one of Shakespeare’s great plays that has resonated with audiences for hundreds of years on hundreds of stages. Andres Noormets has created his own adaptation of the classical play, remaining true to the author’s plot but abandoning the verse. He previously used the same technique in his 2016 production of “Othello” at the Vanemuine Theatre. Noormets says, “Verse takes us away from the present day and turns the dialogue into something museum-like. I want to come closer to the audience and invite them to watch a story that, despite the changes, remains faithful to the original and tells the tale of people who fall from so high that they manage to meet themselves before reaching the ground.”
