To celebrate Tallinn City Theatre’s 60th season, Uku Uusberg directed Shakespeare’s philosophical comedy “As You Like It” on the Big Stage of Salme Cultural Centre. The large-scale production pays tribute to classical theatre.
William Shakespeare wrote “As You Like It” in 1599, around the same time he also wrote “Hamlet”. Both plays present a very similar question about the essence of man. It is well relatable today what the playwright wished to express in the expectation of the turn of the century (atonement) and what he hoped for in the humanity. While “Hamlet” is a play that has been performed in Estonia numerous times, “As You Like It” has not had that many encounters with our audiences. But the reality of this play, where one brother can attack the other, and nature in its honesty can shake up our thinking, deserves to meet the contemporary audience here and now.
“As You Like It” combines love stories, political intrigues, opposition of city life and country life, music, and the secret truth about a single force underneath it all.
